What qualifications are important to you when choosing a forensic psychiatrist? Clinical experience, training, research and teaching? No forensic psychiatrist is qualified in ALL forensic issues. Nowadays psychiatry has EIGHT subspecialties recognized as medical subspecialties by the ABPN and the ABMS.
This means that when choosing a psychiatric expert it might be important to you that he/she has at least completed approved specialty training in the area in which they claim expertise. Psychiatrists, like other physicians, may choose to receive sub-specialized training in a fellowship program after completing their general psychiatric residence.
General psychiatric training and clinical experience are sufficient for some forensic purposes. However, in many cases familiarity with highly specialized clinical issues is extremely important.
